Welcome to a tour of Fresnillo! Many have asked what it's like here, so here are some pictures! |
We will start in downtown Fresnillo. The "centro" is filled with busy streets and little shops. |
As you walk along the streets, fruit and vegetable stands like this one highlight the contrast between the old and new of Fresnillo, as it sits in front of a popular cellphone distributor. |
This is one of the main plazas in town, which is rumored to be the geographical center of Mexico. We're right in the middle! |
This relatively newly finished walking area takes us up the hill to the neighborhood where we work. Many people get out and exercise here on weekday mornings. This street is known for its large houses. . . |
. . . such as these two. Notice the bright colors of the houses; one of the things to love about Mexico is the freedom to paint your house, inside and out, whatever colors you want! |
This is the highway is where we "cross the tracks" into our neighborhood of "Patria y Libertad" (Fatherland and Freedom). This main road that circles the city divides a very rich area from a very poor area of town. |
Welcome to Patria y Libertad (P&L)! Up this street is the elementary school where most of our kids attend. |
Every Saturday morning, women gather on this corner to sell used clothing or other items. |
This is a view of one of the main streets heading down to our church building. |
Although many of the road in our colonia are being paved, many up the hill where most of our kids live still enjoy the "natural look". |
Even in our neighborhood there are those who are better off (like the teachers who live in this house--being a teacher is one of the better jobs you can have here). . . |
. . . and there are those who struggle a little more. Children and youth from both of these houses have been involved in our Kids' Club and youth groups.
Now we are approaching one of our main buildings, dubbed "La Escuela" (the school). This building was completed in 2000 and provides more space for classes and groups to meet.
Next to the "Escuela" is the "Bodega" ("warehouse" in english), which is our church building. Inside there is a big room where we have Bible club, food giveaway, and church. This is the main location for most of our ministry. |
Between the "big bodega" and the "small bodega" (where we have Sunday school as well as a Kids' Club class), is the "cancha", our small basketball court. |
A few years ago, we were excited about the construction of a small general store on the corner across from the "Escuela". Sometimes on club visits our kids get to go over to the store for a special treat.
On another corner there is a "tortillerķa", where tortillas are made. It's the most convenient place to buy tortillas before a big Sunday lunch. |
And then on the fourth corner, there is an open lot which has been taken over by the "cholos", the youth who hang out in gangs, to use as a soccer field. It's good to see them there cleaning up trash and trying to make it a decent playing space. |
This picture, along with the one before this of the "soccer field", was taken from the roof of the "Escuela". It's nice to be able to get away for a little while up there and also get a good view of the neighborhood. |
We often get to see awesome sunsets in the evenings, which make us thank God for the beauty of His creation and think of Christ returning one day in the clouds. |
What beautiful colors God painted across the sky in the evening! |
To finish up this tour of Fresnillo, here is a picture taken from the roof of a downtown building. One of our 4 year olds saw this rainbow by her house. . . |
. . . and cried out to her mom, "Look! A promise!" She then went on to explain to her mom about God's promise to never flood the world again. Please pray that God will continue to reveal His promises to the people of Fresnillo. Thank you! |
